DR1

The DR-1 is a WW1 german fighting plane.  This is a Proctor kit that I bought already built as a display model.  I converted it to a flying model.  This was more work then I anticipated.   I powered it with an old used OS 90.  This engine still has the glow plug in front (a finger chopper).  Proctor Kits are lightweight.  The design of this plane is such that it normally requires a lot of lead in the front.  I thought if I have to add weight, I would rather add usable weight; that is how the 90 ended up on it.

It has almost no roll out on take off; maybe 5ft until airborne.  It "Climbs like a monkey" attributed to the Red Baron.  It will do a tight loop like you have never seen before.  When the engine quits the air resistance brings it down very quickly.  You have to put it into a dive and pull it out just above the ground to dead stick it.  When it lands it almost always breaks a strut on a lower wing.  The lower wing attachment is with a rubber band stretched between two halves to facilitate their survival.  It draws a lot of attention because it is so unusual.  It actually flys very easy.  For me, it's a "Sunday" plane; if you know what I mean.

Update on this one... I sold it to my friend Charles Allan
